1 Two years after the death of her husband, Francisco Xavier, Maria Teresa arrived in New York with four of her five children in 1919 on a ship owned by United Fruit Company named the "Santa Marta". There is a photo of the Santa Marta:

Maria Teresa and Francisco's eldest son Ramon -who was about 20yrs old at the time- had recently arrived in New York and was working for the pharmaceutical firm W.R. Grace & Co. Formerly in Ecuador he had worked for this company translating pharmaceutical labels from English to Spanish.

Upon her arrival at Ellis Island, the four children with her on the ship were ages 6,9, 10 and 11 (Bonnie, Mary Agnes, Sookie and Lola). Maria Teresa's untimely death from cancer of the Uterus would leave these young children orphans within a few short years after the family's arrival in New York. A copy of the original ships manifest (two pages) is available at the Ellis Island Website here:
Page One (opens in a new window - cols 1-13)
Page Two (opens in a new window - cols 14-33)
...The entries for Maria Teresa and her children are on lines 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 showing the age of each of them and other information.

  • The ships manifest had a column (column 14) requiring passengers to state whether they were going to join a relative or friend and if so, the name and address of the relative or friend. For Maria Teresa (row 10) this box shows that she and the family were going to join Ramon (with address of W.R. Grace & Co.), however Ramon is shown not as Maria Teresa's son but as her "Brother". Note also that the typed-in name was originally entered as "Ramon M. del Toro" but that the "M." is completed in handwriting as "Martinez". Also the "T" is overwritten with a "P" and the "r" in "Toro" is overwritten also so the intent was undoubtedly "Ramon Martinez Del Pozo".

  • Note that there is also a handwritten note for Maria Teresa (line 10, columns 20-30), part of which is not legible in the online version "???? to son 571 West 159th St. NYC". The illegible part could be "Dischg" ...ie: "Discharged to son 571 West 159th St. NYC".

  • Note also that in column 19 for the family, there is handwriting indicating something about a "Hotel" (...possible immediate destination for the family - uncertain).
